Romanian cinemas are reopening

After a long period of inactivity, cinemas are back in business.

Starting this Friday, May 21, the Eforie Cinematheque in Bucharest opens its doors to all moviegoers eager to (re)discover masterpieces on the big screen. You can check the program for May 21-30 here.

Also this Friday, the Union Cinema resumes screenings at 50% capacity, and brings to the audience long-awaited films such as Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (dir. Radu Jude), Berliner (dir. Marian Crișan), Undine (dir. Christian Petzold), or Corpus Christi (dir. Jan Komasa).

27 multiplexes and 242 cinemas in 20 cities, with a capacity of over 40,000 seats, are ready to accommodate film enthusiasts from all over the country, as Cinema City resumes activity on May 27.

The first week’s schedule includes some of the most awarded and discussed productions of the year:

  • Nomadland (dir. Chloé Zhao), the big winner at the Oscars, including awards for Directing and Leading Actress;
  • Another Round (dir. Thomas Vinterberg), the Oscar for International Feature Film;
  • Soul (dir. Pete Docter, Kemp Powers), the Oscar for Animated Feature Film and Original Score;
  • Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (dir. Radu Jude), the Golden Bear at the Berlinale.

Other movies the public shouldn’t miss out in the next period at Cinema City are The Comeback Trail (dir. George Gallo), The Marksman (dir. Robert Lorenz), Cruella (dir. Craig Gillespie), Tom & Jerry (dir. Tim Story), The Conjuring 3 (dir. Michael Chaves), A Quiet Place 2 (dir. John Krasinski), Black Widow (dir. Cate Shortland), Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (dir. Derek Drymon, Jennifer Kluska), and The Suicide Squad (dir. James Gunn). The full program is available here.

On top of that, Cinema City opens two new multiplexes equipped with the latest technologies, in Buzău and Brașov.

Cineplexx, too, reopens the doors of its five cinemas – Băneasa, Titan, Satu-Mare, Sibiu and Târgu-Mureș on May 28.

The weekend of May 28-30 will host productions such as Tom & Jerry (dir. Tim Story), Cruella (dir. Craig Gillespie), The Conjuring 3 (dir. Michael Chaves), and many others, which the public can discover by checking the program on the Cineplexx website or in the Cineplexx app available for free on iOS and Android.

Among the movie chains that will resume activity on May 28 is also Movieplex.

Two other cinemas where great films, some of them presented in preview or premiere in Romania, already run on the big screen are the Elvire Popesco Cinema and Happy Cinema.
