The 94th Oscars were held on Sunday, March 27, at the Dolby Theater, Hollywood, Los Angeles.

After 3 consecutive years of hostless ceremonies, this time, the role was divided between Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes.

In an effort to streamline the event, 8 of the 23 categories were presented before the actual ceremony. The presentations and the winners’ speeches were further edited into the live televised show.

The categories in question were: Best Documentary Short, Best Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Animated Short, Best Live Action Short, Best Sound.

The decision has sparked controversy among filmmakers. The nominees in these categories were urged to boycott the event to draw attention to the fact that all creatives and artists working on a film are equally important to the end result.

This year’s contenders for Best Picture were: Belfast (dir. Kenneth Branagh), CODA (dir. Sian Heder), Don’t Look Up (dir. Adam McKay), Drive My Car (dir. Ryûsuke Hamaguchi), Dune (dir. Denis Villeneuve), King Richard (dir. Reinaldo Marcus Green), Licorice Pizza (dir. Paul Thomas Anderson), Nightmare Alley (dir. Guillermo del Toro), The Power of the Dog (dir. Jane Campion), West Side Story (dir. Steven Spielberg).

The big winner of the evening was CODA (dir. Sian Heder).
