The 93rd Academy Awards, popularly known as “The Oscars”, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will take place on April 25, 2021, two months later than it was originally scheduled due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema, therefore allowing the eligibility period for feature films to be extended: they must have a qualifying release date between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021.

The shortlists for Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, International Feature Film, Makeup And Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film and Visual Effects were announced on February 9. Unlike the previous editions, the lists for International Feature Film and Documentary Feature were extended to fifteen films from the original ten. 

The surprise of the evening was the selection in the categories Documentary Feature and International Feature Film of the Romanian documentary Collective by Alexander Nanau, which is available on HBO GO.
