László Nemes on Moulin: “I see this movie as a love letter”
After receiving moderate reviews and a modest reception for his last two films, Orphan and Sunset, Oscar-winning director László Nemes returns to Cannes with Moulin, an impressive biopic about French Resistance hero Jean Moulin that focuses on the final chapter of his life, particularly his imprisonment. One could argue that Nemes has once again chosen to explore a pivotal moment in history, but this time through a more classical narrative approach, closer to the conventions of American storytelling – like the conventional and explicit scenes of interrogation and torture. Nevertheless, his signature close-ups and grandiose set pieces remain very much present, and the film succeeds in keeping the audience captivated until the very end.
