Kristoffer Borgli – Drama, drama, drama!
Following in the footsteps of filmmakers who are provocative in the truest sense of the word (Lars von Trier, David Cronenberg, Ruben Östlund), Norwegian director Kristoffer Borgli is a maverick who specializes in narrative distortions, hyper-alert editing, pulling the rug out from under viewers, outlandish plot twists, and so on. With each new film, he seems to turn the concept of empathy on its head: where and when does people’s empathy for their fellow humans end, and when does cynicism become possible? His latest whim, The Drama, which hit theaters on 3rd of April here and abroad, anchors him, at least superficially, at least in theory in standard Hollywood formulas (a cast featuring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson in what’s supposed to be a romantic comedy), but when it comes to Borgli, all of this is part of an elaborate farce.
